Lonaconing Silk Mill

Originally operated by the Klotz Throwing Company, this is the last intact silk mill in the U.S. It opened in Lonaconing, MD in 1907. A WWII ban on imports from Japan, originat of most of the raw silk, threatened the existence of the mill. After the war, the mill came back online. Work ceased abruptly in July 1957, when workers voted to strike. The mill never reopened.
